To accommodate the library’s growing community program and service offerings, the Franklin County Library System embarked on a plan to create a new library and discovery center at Coyle Free Library in downtown Chambersburg. Combining old and new with tradition and technology, Noelker and Hull Associates paid particular attention to preserving the historic integrity of the building. The library’s design embraces its original roots as the Chambersburg Post Office and an office for Internal Revenue Services, preserving the original woodwork, marble base, terrazzo and wood floors, and other original finishes.

The comprehensive renovation and addition project more than doubled the library’s space to 29,000 square feet. The project restored the building’s historic exterior, with lower level interior spaces featuring a 50-seat theater, 120-seat conference room, studio, teen room, and café. The children’s library moved to the first floor and features a story room. The library’s second floor includes library services, offices, a genealogy center, business center, “huddle rooms,” and conference areas. The top floor showcases a “living roof” with a conservatory, kitchenette, and space for lectures and private events.
