We are excited to announce that our recent interior design project for Abilities in Motion (AIM), a non-profit organization based in Reading, Pennsylvania, has been honored with a 2025 Building Berks Award by the Greater Reading Chamber Alliance. Abilities in Motion is dedicated to empowering individuals with disabilities to live independent, self-determined lives. The award-winning design includes collaborative workspaces, a sensory-friendly café, and a cutting-edge tech center featuring adaptive tools and gaming systems allowing AIM to create inclusive spaces for all types of abilities.
The interior design of AIM’s headquarters reflects Noelker and Hull’s unwavering dedication to elevating our clients’ values above all else, while delivering thoughtfully designed environments that leave a lasting impression on every individual who experiences them. Cassie Kennedy, NCIDQ, Senior Interior Designer at Noelker and Hull, worked alongside Olsen Design Studios to create a stunning space free of barriers. Cassie, while on the project, handled Interior Design Fit-Out, finish materials, color palettes, and furniture selections. She reveals, “For the first piece, I met with the owner’s team to review finish materials and color palettes. The primary considerations were using the appropriate materials that allowed flush transitions between flooring types as well as appropriate acoustics, slip resistance, durability, and cleanability.”
Along with Olsen Design Group, Cassie worked to create a space that was refreshing and inviting for those who walked through the doors of AIM’s headquarters. As they continued to move forward with the project, Cassie focused on meeting with the owner’s team regarding the furniture selection. She explains, “The team tested multiple chair samples and requested feedback from their staff to help make final decisions. Furniture was selected with universal design in mind to further reinforce Abilities in Motion’s inclusiveness in the workplace. Noelker and Hull Associates also helped to coordinate the final quote and installation between the furniture dealer and the owner.”
With universal design, Abilities in Motion’s headquarters will be functional without needing adaptations or specialized design. The headquarters is a place designed for a broad variety of human abilities and needs, ultimately reducing barriers, fostering independence, social inclusion, and equitable opportunities for all. “Not only do I feel happy for the owner that the space is performing well, but it makes me proud that we, Noelker and Hull, can design spaces adhering to the principles of universal design that are also warm, welcoming, and functional for everyone,” Cassie expresses.
The Building Berks Awards, hosted by the Greater Reading Chamber Alliance in Reading, Pennsylvania, recognizes the many visions and collaborations of businesses driving investment in the region. The Abilities in Motion headquarters, along with many other projects nominated, represented $186 million in investment, 2,600 jobs created or retained, and 1.3 million SF of development.
Noelker and Hull, as an architectural and interior design firm, desires not only to listen, engage, and inspire, but also design beautiful, universal spaces, such as AIM’s headquarters. Cassie shares, “We always follow best practices to work toward universal design, making spaces as barrier-free as possible, but Abilities in Motion took that to a whole new level. It was inspiring to work with a client whose dedication to inclusivity and accessibility, beyond code requirements, allowed us to create an environment perfect for their mission and their staff. Abilities in Motion’s headquarters exemplifies the caliber of innovation and excellence that Noelker and Hull aims to deliver in future projects—proving that high performance and thoughtful design can go hand in hand without compromise.”
